History:

The idea of creating a zoo in Odessa first arose on the eve of celebrating the centenary of the city, in 1889, when the drawing and plan of "Zverinets on the police street at the cliff" was made, but this plan failed to come to life. The next step to the creation of the zoo was taken in 1914 - a project for its construction on the territory of the botanical garden, approved by the City government, was created, but the First World War and then the Civil War interfered with these plans. And only in 1922 began the construction of a zoo in Odessa on Primorsky Boulevard, in the area of the lower garden of the Vorontsov Palace. The main merit in organizing the first zoo in Odessa belongs to one of the energetic leaders of the Yugoklimat Society, Henry Vladimirovich Beyzer. Despite the great work done (grottoes were built for lions, bears and tigers, bird pools, slide for mountain goats) there were many problems in the activities of the zoo. This is both insufficient funding and virtually unsuitable territory for satisfactory animal placement. The city authorities decided to close the zoo. In December 1927, the all-union competition for the zoo project in Odessa was announced. Three projects were immediately adopted as the basis for the construction of the future zoo. Construction of the zoo along the Arcadian Road was started in 1929. In the specified territory in Arcadia exploration works were in full swing - landscaping works were completed, dams were built on the main alley, the embankment of the "Caucasus Mountains" was started. City officials planned to commission a part of the zoo during 1930. The Yugoklimat Society has already assembled a collection of animals for the future of the zoo. But this project was not implemented either. Only the surviving name of the adjacent street - the Zoo street - is reminiscent of it. Despite all the difficulties, GV Bazert continued to tirelessly act. In 1933, he was entrusted with the management of the department of the 4th Govenor of the province. The institution itself belonged to Goszirk, which for several years placed its menagerie in the city hall, and then in the territory of Privoz. At that time in Odessa by the decision of the city authorities the first Christian cemetery was liquidated. In the late 1930s, an Ilyich park and a zoo appeared in the former cemetery. However, the only archival document confirming the opening of the zoo at a new location on the street. The vaccine series, 25 became the report of the director of the zoo G. Beysert at the executive committee of the Ilyichevsky District Workers' Council on March 16, 1945, in which he reported that the "Odessa Zoo was organized in the territory of the Ilyichevsky Park in 1937", and without budgetary allocations, and "worked of age ». The opening of the zoo for visitors took place in 1938. At this location, in the city center, next to the famous "Privoz" the zoo is located to this day. In 1992, in accordance with the Law of Ukraine "On the Nature Reserve Fund", the zoo was granted the status of a protected territory of national importance and became part of the Nature Reserve Fund of Ukraine. The Odessa Zoo is the only one in Ukraine where Indian elephants have successfully reproduced. In 1992, the first was born, named Sim.  Artificially impregnated in 1998, a baby elephant weighing about 90 kg was born, she was called Tandy. She lives in the Kharkiv Zoo. In 2004, the third baby elephant, named Duke, was born to Tarun and Wendy. For several yearsth e Amur Leopards is bred in Odessa Zoo. They live in the Far East. Amur leopard is one of the most beautiful and rare cats of the world's fauna. In the nature of these animals, no more than 40 individuals remain, and they are protected by International law.
