The zoo is part of the historical Antoniadis Gardens. Its area is 25 acres. In 1986 Alex zoo joined the State of Egyptian Zoos and Wild Life Conservation. It is considered the second largest zoo in Egypt, after Giza Zoo in Cairo. It contains a lot of species. The species on display include: Asian Elephant, Common Hippopotamus, Lions, Bengal Tigers, Leopards, Striped Hyenas, California Sealions, Giraffes, Zebras, Nilgai, Scimitar Horned Oryx, a selection of bears and numerous species of monkey.
