History
Baku Zoo opened in 1928 within an existing park named after Anatoly Lunacharsky (which has now been renamed after Nizami Ganjavi). Although the zoo officially became a zoo on January 2, 1942, its official opening took place in 1945 due to World War 2.Until 1958, the zoo was located near a railway station in a small square. The zoological park was moved to Bayil territory in 1958. A landslide in the area in the mid-1970s killed a lion and a bear. In 1982, due to the danger of landslides, it was moved to its current location and its area was increased by more than one hectare. In the following years, an aquarium for fish, a terrarium for reptiles, and a pheasantarium exposition were created for pheasants. In 1979, the government of Baku allocated the necessary funds for constructing the new zoo, which only lasted 5 years because of funding deficiencies. On September 1, 1985, the new Baku Zoo was reopened for visitors. The symbol of the Baku Zoo is the pink flamingo, adopted in the 1990s. The citizens of Baku would bring wounded flamingos to the zoo where its staff, led by veterinarian Chingiz Sultanov, tended to them. There are currently 28 flamingos in the zoo. Following another order from the government, 2 hectares (4.9 acres) were added to the zoo in 2001, expanding its total area to 4.25 hectares (10.5 acres). The area was first used 2021. In 2008, six species of exotic animals were flown to the zoo from Minsk: pairs of Nile crocodiles, nasuas, chinchillas, roe deer, Egyptian dogs, and lynxes. This group of animals was exchanged for a young lion, which was sent from Baku to Minsk at the end of 2007. Further construction was carried out in 2010. A new railway station for children was constructed, but issues related to the zoo's relocation were again raised. In February 2019, on the initiative of Leyla Aliyeva, major reconstruction works were started in the zoological park and the park was renewed. The opening of the renewed park took place on October 7, 2021, and the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, daughters Leyla Aliyeva and Arzu Aliyeva participated in the opening.
