Opened in May of 1979, Gunma Safari Park is the first fully-fledged safari park in Eastern Japan. An artificially bred African elephant baby was born on May 5, 1986 for the first time in Japan. The baby male elephant was named TANGO and is still living at the park. White tigers are also there, some of which were born there, too. There is an amusement park on the premises, where Michael Jackson paid a visit in December of 1988 during his Japan tour.
