The Penghu Aquarium, used by the Fisheries Research Institute, Council of Agriculture to study marine ecology, opened to the public in 1997. It is an impressive structure surrounded by gardens and a marine-sculpture park/recreational area. There are giant statues of dolphins, whales, seahorses, fiddler crabs, lobsters, octopi, and a huge shark's jaw. Inside are two floors of marine-life exhibits, gargantuan aquatic tanks, and an underwater tunnel, the latter a magnificent walkway encased in glass. The tunnel creates the illusion of walking on the bottom of the ocean. The aquarium's exhibits are a reflection of the unique species of marine life in the Penghu region.
